How do you handle the traffic that comes to your blog? How do you know what is traffic and what is not traffic? One of the most asked questions among bloggers is "How much traffic do you get?" Part of this is an egotistical measure and part of it is relative to where you end up on the food chain of blogs. We have recently made a template change and are making similar changes to our site. We have a new logo, colors, and layout. All of this is fine and good, but when I went back to looking at my traffic, I couldn’t figure out where to go. I had a little link before that I clicked and it took me to my nice magic metrics reader where I could spin an algorithm in my head and tell if I need to tweak content or number of posts or other things. Suddenly, after our change, my button went away. It’s as if they took my eyes from my head. I can’t see a thing. Sure, I can read comments and I can look at server stats, but the tool I was using showed me who was coming, and what they were reading and I could tell if it was Google or Yahoo that was delivering all of those search queries and what the search was they used to get to my site.

Traffic is an important thing in the blogosphere. I rely upon it as though it were air or food or water. Without it for very long, and I am dead in the water. I’m sure we will have this plugin and the other information back on the forefront of my blogging metrics but for now, can somebody spare a glass of water and some bread?

When a problogger wakes up in the morning it is usually looking towards an agenda of things that must be read, culled, completed, posted, confirmed and chatted.  Here is an example, Tris Hussey, an advising partner of One By One Media and Bloggers For Hire, is busy making sure to keep up with a blog post he is doing for Tucows as he blogged the conference live while not in the presenters chair.  Scott Goldblatt my other Technical Partner was not live blogging, but making alterations to templates for clients as we all tried to sit and gather the loads of information that is being shouted from the stage.  These two really helped me throughout the conference and did a wonderful job representing the company as professionals and as friends.  As a team we each have our strengths and more than once we were given kudos for being visionaries and splitting our strengths into a reputable company with a forward vision of marketing online.  I just wanted to say thank you and great job guys!Ads by AdGenta.com

In the presentation at the Blog Business Summit, Robert and Maryam Scoble were discussing how to get people to read your postings.  Tris said that all you needed was sex and free alcohol.  Robert quickly quipped:

"I’m posting about sex and free alcohol now to get Tris to read."

This created a roar from the crowd and I think I saw Maryam turn a bright shade of red.  Of course, Robert already has Tris in his feeds, and Tris is a daily reader of Robert’s. If I had to nominate the married Ambassadors of Blogging, Robert and Maryam would be first on my list.

Here's a link to a case study "To Blog Or Not To Blog" conducted by ClickTracks of one of their clients, LuckyOliver.

Some key points in this case study:

1. They're a startup organization, no shortage of things to do—only a shortage of time to do them.

2. One of the first things they should do after the site went live was to create and maintain a LuckyOliver blog.

3. Should blog activities—adding posts, replying to comments and encouraging interaction—be something that was treated as a priority? A corporate blog would be a good use of the company's time?

I can't speak for women, but men…have you noticed how quickly a new conversation with an acquaintance leads to work-related questions?

The questions "What do you do?" or "What do you do for work?" seem to be an ice-breaker for most of the conversations I have with other men.

Here's an example of a typical conversation and one that resembled my conversation on Tuesday.

Michael, a long-time friend of Randy (who's my buddy), was visiting from out of town, and we were introduced. After exchanging pleasantries, the conversation followed with…

Have you ever been fired from a job?

Well I have, and hindsight 20/20, it was the best thing that's happened to me - as I now have been working full-time from home since 2002.

In 2002, I was working for a renowned internet marketer and was fired for referring customers to Planet Ocean and to Michael Campbell (InternetMarketingSecrets.com). These two bleeding edge resources were (and still are) delivering 'meaty' search marketing strategies, and what I thought was customer service  (as they didn't offer the same material) was construed as corporate espionage.

Fast forward to 2006, and Michael (with his lovely wife) and my family enjoy our visits, and we delight in dining on dim sum and spicy Chinese food together. Come to think of it, we're due for another meal… I'll have to call Michael for a lunch date after this email ;-)

If you are familiar with Michael Campbell and his offerings, you'll know these next three titles.

If you're a small business owner who hasn't started your own blog or website yet, this story will interest you.

And if you're already blogging, you can still glean one or two good points from this story. Keep on reading…

This last Monday, I had my first reflexology appointment with Twila, a friend who is a pro masseuse and aromatherapist. She's now embracing the fine art of reflexology and I volunteered to be one of her first 20 'practice' clients.

As I entered her massage room, I was greeted with jazz music whispering amidst the soft glow of lights that enveloped the burgundy-walled relaxation haven. My feet were begging to be pampered as I eased into the massage bed located in the middle of the room.

As she expertly worked on my feet, we chatted about her business, family, her summer… and she segued to her needing a website for her holistic health business.

My interest was piqued.

Our conversation went something like this…
